A gum graft, also called a gingival graft, involves placing gum tissue over an area where the gums have receded. The tissue may come from the roof of your mouth or from a tissue donor source.Gum recession can expose the tooth root, which may lead to increased sensitivity, a higher risk of root decay, and further loss of gum tissue. A graft can help cover the exposed area and strengthen the gum around the tooth. Why do you need a gum graft?Noticeable gum recessionExposed tooth rootsThin gum tissue that is vulnerable to recessionSurfaces that are difficult to keep cleanCosmetic concerns caused by an uneven gum lineNot every case of gum recession requires surgery. Upon consultation we can determine what to improve, treatment of contributing factors, or a gum graft is most appropriate.During the procedureGum grafting is usually performed under local anesthesia, it prepares the affected area and places the graft over the exposed root or reinforces the existing gum tissue.Depending on the technique used, tissue may be taken from the roof of your mouth or obtained from a processed donor source. The graft is then secured with sutures and allowed to heal. The procedure itself may take anywhere from roughly an hour to several hours depending on the number of teeth being treated and the type of graft.Post Operation Some soreness, swelling, and sensitivity are normal after a gum graft. Your dentist may recommend a soft-food diet and provide specific instructions for cleaning your mouth while the graft heals. For the first few days, it’s particularly important to avoid disturbing the graft. You may also be advised to temporarily avoid strenuous exercise, smoking, alcohol, or foods that could irritate the surgical area.Healing varies from person to person. The initial healing period generally takes a few weeks, while the grafted tissue may continue to mature for several months.Book your appointment with us at Clear Dental Clinic!
